Brilliant Basics: ‘Corners, curves and loops’
In this set of Masterclasses we will focus on the basic straight stitch and how it can be used in three different ways to create impact, shape, and embellishment.
All levels of ability welcome!
Zoom webinar links will be sent by email shortly before each Masterclass
Masterclass 1:
Cornered Seams
12th May, 8pm-9pm BST
This Masterclass highlights the need for precision in order to create immediate visual impact, and how best to achieve it.
I will show how to sew both inward and outward corners, and demonstrate the care one must take in effectively reinforcing the angles to give maximum strength.
In particular we will focus on the couture techniques used to create the striking angles of the iconic ‘Mondrian dress’.
Masterclass 2:
Curved Seams and Darts
19th May, 8pm-9pm BST
Curved seams and darts serve to create architecture in a garment, but in essence they rely on the accuracy with which a straight seam is applied.
In addition to instruction on how to create these features, we will also explore how machine speed, stitch length, and the way in which fabric passes under the machine needle can all affect the final outcome.
Masterclass 3:
Loops and Rouleau
26th May, 8pm-9pm BST
The term ‘rouleau’ comes from the French meaning ‘little roll’. In couture terms it refers to a cord or ribbon encased tightly within another fabric. Again, it relies on the precise use of the straight stitch.
A rouleau can be added to create all manner of elaborate embellishments or intricate, decorative shapes.
In this Masterclass we give particular attention to two forms of rouleau; self-filled and piped.
